In January, 2007 the documentary was ranked the third highest grossing documentary and in February, 2007 the film won an Oscar (Hogue, 2007). The United Nations International Panel on Climate Change released a report stating that global atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide have increased significantly as a result of human activities since 1750. Currently exceeding pre-industrial values as determined from ice cores spanning many thousand years (Intergovernmental, 2007). Students attending schools and colleges across the United States have embraced the quest for a solution to global warming, claiming it as a symbol for their generation. Classrooms are filled with students wearing clothing imprinted with environmental slogans and dire warnings. Educators should view this as an opportunity to capitalize on a teachable moment in the present and guide students to examine the social, political, economic and scientific implications of the past. The roots of the current ecological issues lie within the population explosion in the twentieth century, growing from two to six billion people. All of them, devouring the earth’s resources (Tucker, Grim, 2007). A brief examination of some current research should be sufficient to inspire any educator to create a stimulating learning environment for our captive youth. A narrative study focusing on the sociological aspects of communities in relation to the natural environment found that respondents expressed attachment to specific elements of the natural environment primarily in context with the specific lifestyle it supports. Respondents acknowledged a collective concern for the rights of others in relation to the ability to enjoy and use natural assets. Changes to the natural environment had the potential to negatively impact the attachment to a community by affecting both social and economic dimensions (Brehm, 2007). Does climate change affect the frequency of war? Scholars have long believed that organized armed conflicts and climate change are correlated. An anthropologic study of warfare throughout history reveals that temperature fluctuations directly impact agriculture, horticulture, exacerbate natural disasters and increase rates of disease among plants, animals and humans. Focusing on Eastern China during the last millennium, this recent study suggests that two periods of climatic cooling led to the eventual fall of the Ming dynasty (Zhang, Zhang, Lee, He, 2007). Indur M. Goklany recently wrote that the excessive action by Americans in response to global warming will allow technology to mitigate a solution to the problem of global warming (Goklany, 2007). This controversial opinion could certainly spark an interesting classroom discussion. Students could explore recent technological advances in the fight against global warming. The climate appears to be right for investigating the role of history in the midst of our current interest in global warming. Educators need to guide this generation of captivated learners through the wealth of information available. The history of the past can guide us to making the history of the future.

Because horse fanciers admired the gait of a high-stepping horse, a fashionable or attractive person came to be known as â€Å"a high-stepper.† Sometimes the term is used in a negative sense to refer to someone who lives extravagantly, or who aspires to a higher social status: Dona had come to town as a schoolteacher.   She was pretty, vivacious, and in the parlance of the time, a â€Å"high-stepper.† Leo Donnelly, always at his peak in silk-lined, low-comedy, high-stepping crook roles, is here at his best. The following sentence spoken by an NPR regular seems to confuse high-stepping and goose-stepping: Nazi soldiers’ high stepping casts a fog over the event. Note: The word fog is also jarring; perhaps the announcer was reaching for pall. Two more idioms that have literal and figurative meanings are â€Å"to sidestep† and â€Å"to step up to the plate.† The literal meaning of sidestep is to step aside, as if to avoid some physical obstacle: Climbing from the carriage, she held her bag against her chest and  tried to sidestep  a puddle  the size of a small lake. Figuratively, â€Å"to sidestep† is to avoid involvement or responsibility: Jefferson Township Sewer Authority  hopes to sidestep  big expense with grant money. â€Å"Step up to the plate† comes from the game of baseball. Note: Home plate is a 5-sided rubber slab at one corner of a baseball diamond at which a batter stands when batting and which must be touched by a base runner in order to score. When it’s a player’s turn to bat, he â€Å"steps up to the plate.† Figuratively, the expression means to come forward and accept responsibility for something that must be done: Community members stepped up to the plate and raised more than $2,700 for the Harmon Killebrew Miracle Field at a recent fundraiser. Unrelated to the verb step in the sense of moving the feet is the affix step- as in stepchild. This step derives from an ancient Germanic word element that was placed before the word for a family member â€Å"to form designations for the degrees of affinity resulting from the remarriage of a widowed parent.† For example, a widow who married a widower would become the stepmother of the widower’s children. They in turn would be her stepchildren. Stepmothers in all the fairy tales I’ve read are notorious for their ill treatment of their stepchildren. Consider, for example, the stories of Cinderella and Hansel and Gretel. Because of the stereotype of the wicked stepmother, the word stepchild has acquired the figurative meaning of â€Å"someone or something that is neglected, undervalued, or abused.† Here are some examples: â€Å"Its a sad fact that P.E. is  educations  ugly  stepchild,† said Goldstein. Rarely is open space seen as more than an afterthought. It truly is a stepchild of planning when it should be a catalyst and spatial organizer for development.   A fairly recent embellishment of stepchild in the sense of an object of abuse and neglect is the expression â€Å"redheaded stepchild.† The earliest evidence of the phrase in the Ngram Viewer is dated 1923. An article at World Wide Words references an example from 1910. Like stepmothers, redheaded people do not fare well in folklore. If a stepchild is undervalued, then a redheaded stepchild is the object of special negative attention: We then learned that Waukegan is apparently  the North  Shores  red headed stepchild.   The South is the  red-headed stepchild  in the American story.   Note: The adjective is hyphenated in the OED, but spelled as one word in Merriam-Webster. Since they are not looking at each other, they follow the fifth rule to look at the top of the door with the floor marker which could also add to the illusion of space within the elevator since there is often no one to block the view to the top of the door. Social norms give us the means and examples of behavior in situations which may not have codified laws for conducting ourselves. Carspecken (1996) uses the example of elevator behavior to show how norms work in western society and suggests that while behavior in close proximity with strangers can be explained in terms of meanings, norms is a better term because it is related to the word normal, i.e. normal expected behavior which is agreed upon by the rest of the social setup in a given location. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X Essay Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X were very important to our country’s history. They are revolutionary men. They fought battles against a bigoted nation. They fought for what they believed was right. The two gentlemen however fought very different battles although they seem to be fighting the same prejudice. If you ask anyone today, that remembers the movement, ‘Who was Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr? The opinions you will hear will be quite contrary to each other. The two men were very influential in American culture. Malcolm X and Martin Luther King were able to use the media to allow their voices to be heard. I will be explaining the reasons why these two gentlemen fought such extreme battles fueled by passion and hate. The media have always been a presence during the movement of the 60’s. During the time of the movement the nation was glued to the media. Martin Luther King, Jr. , is known for his nonviolent manner for leading a protest. As Martin Luther King led his followers, he taught them protest with respect and dignity. Martin Luther King once said, in regard to his nonviolent approach, â€Å"Violence, as a way of achieving racial justice, is both impractical and immoral. It is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. It is immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding; it seeks to annihilate rather than convert. Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. †(Cassutto, 2008). Martin Luther King grew up in a religious family. He comes from educated parents that taught him to be humble. One of the famous non violent protests that Martin Luther King led was the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Instead of fighting the cause with violence, King chose to simply stop riding the buses all together in protest of the segregation police preventing blacks to ride anywhere other than the back of the bus according to (Moultan, Phillips, Styza, Gonzales, 2007). Instead of violence, King and others posted signs at every bus stop that read, â€Å"Don’t ride the bus today, don’t ride it for freedom†, as stated by (Moultan, Phillips, Styza, Gonzales, 2007) According to, (Moultan, Phillips, Styza, Gonzales, 2007), the protesters would not fight back when the whites against segregation would fight or attack the protesters which turned out to be a very powerful move. According to (Moultan, Phillips, Styza, Gonzales, 2007), after 381 days of boycotting the bus system they went to the Supreme Court. Eventually they Supreme Court ruled that is unconstitutional to separate people based on the color of their skin. This is proof that with determination and patience, laws can be changed without the use of violence. Malcolm X wanted the same thing Malcolm X did, freedom. Malcolm X, however, took a very different approach than Martin Luther King did. He felt violence was a way to handle the injustice of segregation. Malcolm X was a follower of the Nation of Islam. Until he made his journey to Mecca, he preached about how all whites are the devils. After his journey to Mecca he saw a different way of approaching the segregation and hatred of whites. Malcolm X still believed in violence when came to fighting for what he felt was right according to, (Simkin, 2003). (Simkin, 2003) states that Malcolm X said in a speech in March of 19I am for violence if non-violence means we continue postponing a solution to the American black mans problem just to avoid violence. I dont go for non-violence if it also means a delayed solution. To me a delayed solution is a non-solution. Or Ill say it another way. If it must take violence to get the black man his human rights in this country, Im for violence exactly as you know the Irish, the Poles, or Jews would be if they were flagrantly discriminated against. (Simkin, 2003) In conclusion, the two men had an extraordinary will to change the future for what they believed was right. The Medias involvement is how we still know today what these men did for this country. Malcolm X and Martin Luther King both took a different approach when they fought for their beliefs. The one thing they had in common was the cause, freedom.

The Great Gatsby Final

In the novel The Great Gatsby, each heartache has very distinctive characteristics; all has life goals and dreams, and played an irreplaceable role in the novel. At first glance, the protagonists and antagonists are clear to see. One would place Jay Gatsby as the good guy, the one who has American dream, and who is a hopeless romantic who believes in everlasting love. For Daisy and Tom, they are definitely the antagonists, the bad ones, the one who tore Gatsby dreams and hopes apart.Nick on the other hand, has a great transformation throughout the novel; being the narrator of the novel, he seemed to have a fairly good view n himself while he's narrating the story'. Nevertheless, as the novel progress, there are parts and bits that could reveal how he may not be who he claimed to be. This paper would focus on the two characters, Nick Caraway and Daisy Buchanan. Their character will be viewed in an objective way, and attempt to see deeper into their life and why they did what they did. In the end, eventually find out whether they are actually the bad or good guy that people tend to view them, or perhaps there's something more to them. L. Nick Caraway: The narrator of this novel is Nick Caraway, a man who grew up in family of prominent, well-to-do people† in Chicago; he is a Yale graduate, loves literature and even considers himself as a â€Å"well-rounded man†. After he fought in the World War I, he joined the prosperous and fast-growing business world in New York.Somehow, he is the cousin of the tremendously wealthy Daisy Buchanan, and a college acquaintance of Tom Buchanan, they lived a luxurious life that was completely opposite of his. Being the narrator, it is easy to believe everything that he said, but there are signs that could show that he is not as simple or positive as he pronounce to be, as Peter L. Hays aid in his paper, Initially Nick's father tells him that â€Å"all the people in this world haven't had the advantages you've had† , presumably material advantages.But Nick interprets the statement to mean â€Å"a sense of fundamental decencies is parceled out unequally at birth†, something very different, and a belief that qualifies Nick very much as a snob. In the novel, Nick is a tolerant and open minded listener, and highly educated so is also an intellectual, people felt the urge to confide to him and trust him. However, while Gatsby made up his past and have illegal business in his present life,Nick's family also did something similar; they earn their money by selling hardware but cover it up by saying that they have ducal blood. When he describes his own house, he said his house is a â€Å"small eyesore,† and gives him â€Å"consoling proximity of millionaires. † Though sounding somehow self- mocking, he might actually feel like being near to the rich does make up for his own living standards, as if lying about his background and living next to the rich could take up closer to being one of the people in the high society.Nick's true thoughts over the rich and himself were never clearly identified, UT it seems possible that he does want to fit into the complicated high society, despite the fact that he views himself as morally more advance than all the rest The readers learn more about his personality by the way he speaks and how he described the others as the novel progress.Nick calls himself â€Å"one of the few honest people that I have ever known† In the beginning of the novel, he claimed that he would reserve all judgments while interacting with others, as quoted from the novel: â€Å"Whenever you feel like criticizing any One,† he told me, â€Å"just remember that all the people in this oral haven't had the advantages that you've had. † He didn't say any more, but we've always been unusually communicative in a reserved way, and I understood that he meant a great deal more than that. In consequence, I'm inclined to reserve all judgments [†¦J. In the above passage, Nick said that he would reserve judgment on all things, but throughout the novel, he seems to be making personal remarks on the other characters. For example, he said his gracious next door neighbor Jay Gatsby is â€Å"unaffected com†, and the Buchannan couple were â€Å"careless people†; even said that his lover Jordan Baker is â€Å"incurably dishonest. Nick is not only the righteous and objective narrator who he claimed to be, he is also someone whose sight is muddled by the lavish life Of the rich and famous.His internal conflict over the lifestyle of his new life in New York goes on throughout the book, and is especially represented by his romantic relationship with Jordan Baker. He is in love with her energy and sophistication, but he is repeatedly disgust by her carelessness and dishonesty. Towards the end of the novel, Jordan said, â€Å"You said a bad driver was only safe until she met another bad driver? Well, I met another bad driver, didn't l? I mean it was careless of me to make such a wrong guess. I thought you were rather an honest, straightforward person. Thought it was your secret pride. Perhaps in the end, the ones who seem the most trustworthy is the one that should not be trusted at all. I. Daisy Buchanan Daisy Buchanan is an interesting character to kick at. In common day terms, some people might view her as the head cheerleader who married the quarterback of the football team, a shallow beauty who cares about nothing but the superficial, money and good looks. Not exactly a scheming gold- digger, since she is already from the elite social class and has incredible lath of her own, but like what she said she wished her daughter would be, â€Å"a beautiful little fool†.Daisy was born in a rich and high class family in Louisville, where she had a short fling with the handsome young man Jay Gatsby who had a fake identity. When Nick described his cousin Daisy, he said she has a voice that m akes her untouchable and â€Å"full of money,† and made her sounds like someone who lives â€Å"high in a white palace, the king's daughter, the golden girl† She was the kind of girl who would make every girl feel jealous, who lived the life of comfort and had everything that any girl could ever wanted.To Gatsby, she is a symbol of wealth and social status, everything that he wanted and trying to achieve, and Gatsby fell in love with her, dedicated his whole life just for her basing on a faint hope that they could somehow be together once more. Unfortunately, the young lovers never got the chance to have their wishes come true, Daisy married another man when Gatsby was away at war. She did seem regretful though, before she got married, she drunkenly said: â€Å"Here, dearer'. â€Å"She groped around in a waste-basket she had with her on the bed and pulled out the string of peers. Take ‘me down-stairs and give ‘me back to whoever they belong to. Tell †˜me all Daisy change; her mind. And I hope she'll be a fool – that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool†Ã¢â‚¬Ëœ It seemed that she was glad that her daughter was a girl, but in between her tears, a sadness also appeared, perhaps she ad wished that her chil d would be a boy, so it would not have to live as vulnerable as her. But since her child was a girl, she then wished that it was a beautiful fool like she is, to live a simple life and be blinded from all the unhappiness that she had to live with despite her wealth.Although not exactly not as complex and great as the â€Å"Great Gatsby', and very flawed, Nick and Daisy are still characters who are worth the reader's attention. They consist of complicated characteristics, both likable and repugnant, which made them seems like people who readers can relate to in their own lives. How to Conjugate the Regular French Verb 'Acheter' ('To Buy') Achete (to buy) is a very common French stem-changing verb. It is a verb that has two different stems but is conjugated with the same endings as  regular -er verbs. Stem-changing verbs are sometimes also called boot verbs or shoe verbs  because if you circle the forms that have stem changes in the conjugation table below, the resulting shape looks like a boot or shoe.
